The labors of love - Organizing a charity event, the poor mans way
Let me start be saying, running a site like ours, no matter how small it can be, is tough work and definitely not easy on the wallet. Being a man of modest means, really drives that point home. Over the last several months, i've been dealing with planning a wedding, and the stress, costs and struggles with that (not to mention my regular day job issues) have really put a damper on my administrative role here. Regardless, this isn't about my moaning, it's about how we, as a small site can really make an impact on our worldwide community, even during trying times and personal struggles.
Some three years ago, we as a group of moderators and administrators, decided to take the plunge into the world of "the charity drive". It's been a universal agreement amongst most of our membership that giving back is really of vital of importance as a community and it's hardly a simple task to organize. This site doesn't generate any real income (mostly by choice) so not having a large resource pool to draw from makes things like site modifications to support such an event, fall directly on my hands. It's also quite simply amazing that, however you slice it, Mart Brinkley, has been our bullhorn, a diamond in the rough and has really fostered our promotion. Without him and the many people here that contribute to our goals, we simply could not exist, let alone tackle such an undertaking that a charity event requires. It's tough for me to verbalize just how nicely people are pulling together, not just now, but in the overall life of the site. That's really the point, we have continually tried to be a home for those that need it, with support, an open forum to vent and that have overall feeling of friendship without much requirement. Regardless of our struggles to sustain, i'd truly like to continue that trend.
If the goal of fund raising events is to show how well a community can pull together for a cause, then we've met that goal. It's always come down to the contributions and efforts of the whole that make a poor mans goals really come through, and that's how we do it, no matter how much we raise.
