It's a pretty good game, but it needs some polish. I might wait a few months before subscribing.
Part of me just thinks I shouldn't play any MMOs because I don't stick with them.

I'm not sure you can even review an MMO that has only been out for a few weeks, but G4TV has done so...

I'm probably going to give it 3 months to stamp out the bugs and smooth some stuff out before I get into it.

I just got an email from Atari, stating that I can save big on a lifetime subscription to Star Trek Online! At $239.99 USD, that's a 60 dollar saving! Now, if I can just book an appointment with the brain surgeon to lobotomize me, I'll be able make the decision to pay a big sum for a lifetime subscription to an MMO that probably won't last the year! Yay!

I was in the Beta before launch - STO BETA - Picasa Web Albums
I really haven't heard much about the game recently. I'm sort of interested in trying it again, but I'll probably wait.
It might go Free to Play.

Did this game ever get the polish you were looking for, Ron? Also, I'm wondering what the specs are like, i.e. whether or not I could play it on my Mac in Boot Camp.

Well, at the low low price of free, I couldn't resist.
I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying the game. Like most MMO's, it gets deeper and deeper as you wade in. It's been a loooong while since I've delved into an MMO, but the whole endeavour seems incredibly complicated. Off the top of my head, you have a plethora of ships to choose from, each with many slots to improve, you have a roster of bridge crew to manage each with varying perks to exploit both on the bridge and during away missions, a duty roster where you assign away missions to a pool of crew members that earn you credits and other currency items, a tonne of missions, both as part of a main story arc or a bunch of side missions, multiple inventory slots, a robust crafting system, a busy exchange where you buy and sell items, blah blah blah and on it goes.
The game also has a more Star Trek feel than maybe any game I've ever played. Sure, due to the MMO nature some aspects get stretched and abstracted and blown out of all proportion, but over all, from the NPCs to the feel of space combat to the character designs, it plays like a wonderful homage to the entire Trek cannon.
In short, make it so. Look for me online as 8TrackMind.
