What makes an online family?

Posted by SMB25 , in On my mind 10 November 2010 · 4805 views

What is it about our little group that has been so successful?  We have members from all across the globe from different walks of life, religion, political beliefs, races, income and ideology.  It’s a virtual melting pot if you will.

We've all been members of other gaming forums and on each one you have those that belittle all who disagree using name calling and bullying in disagreements with other posters.

How is it that we have avoided that?  Is it simply a maturity level, or is it something else?  We've become a family of sorts - sharing our life's ups and downs, our defeats and our victories.

Having recently been diagnosed with cancer I saw this little family of ours offer up sympathies and concern like nothing I've experienced before.  More thoughtful comments came from my "virtual" friends than my real life friends.  Not that I don't think my friends that are near me care any less, but this family was more vocal in offering their advice and concern.

What is it that spurs us to be a part of something like the Beautiful Peoples Club?  We welcome newcomers with open arms hoping that they sit a while and share in the shade our tree has to offer.  Some may just stop for a while and then move on, but you see them come back after months of being away - and when they sit with us again it is like they have never left.

Maybe it's because we are a refreshing change from most game forums and groups. We aren't competitive really. We just love to play with our friends!

I was immediately impressed when I dropped by for the first time, having only ever belonged to forums where there were tons of rules and a fair amount of immature people who had inspired them.

Not only does this place not really have rules, but it isn't truly in need of them, which I find almost amazing. I can post my thoughts, agree or disagree with anyone here and no one acts as though I've given their puppy cancer because of anything I say. Differing opinions aren't seen as a direct insult on others, here, and at most all I've seen is friendly teasing.

You truly have an amazing community.

You know I've asked myself this same question.. Why do I hang out with you whack jobs!? I mean really you all need straitjackets!! :D :D

That right there is why I keep coming back! I can joke around like that and no one gets pissed. :)

No seriously I remember a post awhile back that was something like " can you call someone you never met face to face a friend?" and at one time I would have said no but after hanging out with you wackos for damn near 2 years (wow 2 years)I can say yes..

As for rules yea we have em but I don't ever think I've seen them enforced ^_^

Great thought provoking blog by the way :D

OK so why is this forum successful? Why don't we flame each other or call someone a loser because they don't have the latest game?
How comes we've never had a political or religious rebellion on our hands (we've had discussion, but nothing too heavy from what I've seen)?
Why is it when I post here, people actually take the time to read what I posted and then form an intelligent response?

I think I know the answer . . .

Respect.

Respect that we're all mature enough to know that everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Respect that we know that flaming someone doesn't help.
Respect to know that if I want to call you a 'jackwagon', I'm doing it out of fun and not malice.

I was once asked what makes a great family, and this place certainly feels like a family to me (except I like more of you than I do my own family LOL).
My answer was something along the lines of:
  • The way you interact with each other.
  • How you treat each other.
  • What you do together.
  • What you do to support each other individually.

All of the above apply to BPC in my opinion.

OK, enough from me, I need a Kleenex and my keyboard just shorted out - I love you guys.

I found that the best thing is the ability to jump online dump your thoughts and wait for replies I love the fact that you can take the mick and not offended anyone play what you want when you want and then go play something else.

Brilliant place to be where winning is enjoyed but not expected.

Patience and the realization that everyone was a newbie once, which goes back to Mart's answer of Respect.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the fact that the website is so professionally put to together, it's by far the best site i've been on for access through my mobile and with bpc chat and the standard website being of the highest standards.

The ability to communicate in various formats from massive super computers to my tiny little g1 then galaxy s just makes it easier to talk to you all than it does my real family and most of the time they are in the next room. Lol massive thanks to everyone who has input into how the site looks and performs. :-)

I think it is because we all really care about each other and we are adult. We feel like one big family but we don't have to put up with the main family drama. We can come in here and talk or not just see what everyone is doing. Then we can get on the PS3 or what ever you have and play game and bs with each other and when someone scores a win we are really happy. We don't have to put anyone down to make our selves feel better, we care and are happy to hear from each other and find out what is going on an give and take advice more than we probly do from our real family's. Glad to have found a great group of people that I can call friends and a second family. ^_^

I think it's simply because of our maturity level. That, and knowing that gaming isn't our life, but a part of it that we enjoy. In other words, our worth isn't tied to our ability to go flawless in a FPS or unlock the most difficult of trophies, or know every little thing about a game.

We could touch on topics that would start flaming and hateful speech on other boards, simply because we have self-control and respect for one another. Even if we might not agree, we don't blurt out anything negative just because we have a forum and opportunity to do so. Which a lot of people on other forums probably can't even fathom.

Unbelievable, Duchess. I read your post, and now all of my puppies have puppy cancer!

In all seriousness, although i'm not visibly active, I tend to go through a lot of posts and conversations and whatnot. I'm not much when it comes to thought and conveying my opinions.

And yet I still fit in to this specific group, due to the amount of respect, and how amicable everyone mostly is. I always find myself trying to purchase games just to attend events. I remember when I started out, I had practically nothing other than Burnout to play with everyone. I remember telling my girlfriend 'Oh hey, we have to be home before 6. I have to play with my new friends.' She'd laugh at the whole thing. It was a different experience to hear everyone having fun in a mildly organised manner with a larger group of people. It's nice compared to the natural online environment, which is a bit hectic and full of loud teenage boys, virtual teabagging, and internet threats.

I do find myself trying to work out a schedule to get on, or even try to remember to get on at the right hour. It's just so interesting to hear everyone coming from different parts of the world, while where I live it's basically a supreme border town.
