In-Game - Is a Wii 2 on the way?

Multiple Sources Confirm New Nintendo HD Console - News - www.GameInformer.com

Depending on how big of a leap this system actually turns out to be, it might speed up Sony & MS own Next Gen system plans.

A HD screen on the controller? That just sounds useless.

Awaiting more details, though.

nintendo's biggest thing going for it is it's first party titles and i've lost all interest in them. Their gimmicky controls I don't think they'll be able to pull off twice so good luck with that. As far as I'm concerned the iphone ipad is the new king of crapy cheap games and they've undercut nintendo entirely. If they do decide to release, I think it's too early. They should be first before their competitors but I don't think the other guys are gonna announce anything for another two years at least. This is of course based on no insider information just my Guinness fueled dream world that I live in.

Cheers

That would seem to be quite a departure from the current Wii

Yeah, it seems weird that Mother N would backtrack from their motion Wii-motes so thoroughly.

Maybe they would rather sell Games instead of just Consoles.

IGN has learned that the system will be based on a revamped version of AMD's R700 GPU architecture, not AMD's Fusion technology as previously believed, which will, as previously reported, out perform the PlayStation 3's NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor. Like the Xbox 360, the system's CPU will be a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset, but the clocking speeds will be faster. The system will support 1080p output with the potential for stereoscopic 3D as well, though it has not been determined whether that will be a staple feature.

As reported last week, it will indeed utilize controllers with integrated touchscreens and be capable of streaming games to each controller, though given the power of the system, could also feasibly provide a virtualized console for each individual unit.

The lack of HD is exactly why I don't bother with my Wii. Though, now that I'm used to not playing it, I'll most likely pass this up too.

I was reading today that the rumour is that the Wii ii will only have an 8G solid state drive or something. I think that's about the size of my Bioshock 2 saves.

E3 2011 Nintendo Wii U: Inside and Out - GameSpot

No. It's not just the controller. It's a whole full-fledged new console with a new controller to boot.

Launches: 2012

Size: Approximately 1.8 inches tall, 6.8 inches wide and 10.5 inches long.

New Controller: The new controller incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen and traditional button controls, including two analog Circle Pads. This combination removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world. The rechargeable controller includes a Power button, Home button, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons. It includes a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus.

Other Controls: Up to four Wii Remote™ (or Wii Remote Plus) controllers can be connected at once. The new console supports all Wii™ controllers and input devices, including the Nunchuk™ controller, Classic Controller™, Classic Controller Pro™ and Wii Balance Board™.

Media: A single self-loading media bay will play 12-centimeter proprietary high-density optical discs for the new console, as well as 12-centimeter Wii optical discs.

Video Output: Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i. Compatible cables include HDMI, component, S-video and composite.

Audio Output: Uses AV Multi Out connector. Six-channel PCM linear output through HDMI.

Storage: The console will have internal flash memory, as well as the option to expand its memory using either an SD memory card or an external USB hard disk drive.

CPU: IBM Power®-based multi-core microprocessor.

Other: Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.

(Taken from the Nintendo E3 2011 Press Release)

Games announced: Smash Brothers, Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham City, Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon Online, Darksiders II, Dirt, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Metro: Last Night, Tekken, Ninja Gaiden 3, FIFA 12, Madden 12, Driver, Lego City Stories

Other facts: (GTTV interview with Reggie)

The price point of the system will be competitive to the current prices of the PS3, 360 in terms of value
The games shown for Wii U at the show were actually PS3 and 360 versions but the Wii U will look the same or better
No BluRay Support
Controller's screen is single-touch
Backwards compatible with the Wii's Games, but no upscaling is done

And this is smart because... why? I find it hard to believe that developing your own proprietary media at this stage involves lower costs than simply using an existing standard like Blu-Ray. Strike one.

Storage: The console will have internal flash memory, as well as the option to expand its memory using either an SD memory card or an external USB hard disk drive.

You know the included flash memory won't hold jack diddly squat other than game saves. That means I have to pay extra to get storage for other things, effectively upping the cost of the console compared to the other two. Strike two.

No BluRay Support

I have an extensive Blu-Ray library now. If I can't play them, I have to swap between this and a different device just for the Blu-Ray playback. This also goes back to the use of a proprietary format. Because my Playstation 3 has Blu-Ray, it will play my games AND my movies. If you only own a Wii right now, by upgrading you not only need to buy the new Wii but also a separate Blu-Ray player should you wish to buy/rent HD movies on disc. Strike three.

Backwards compatible with the Wii's Games, but no upscaling is done

My TV does a crappy job of upscaling. On the other hand, my Playstation 3 (which is now several years old technology) does a decent job upscaling live action and a stellar job upscaling animation. Strike four.

would have been nice if they threw in blu ray support. We're already seeing the 360 maxed out. Why no 3-D support? I don't own a 3-d tv but if i were to buy a new one it would be specifically for gaming....which I can't do on the new Wii. the tech demo's look nice and all but i didn't see anything that was not possible on 360 or PS3. I don't mind he screen on the joypad, this was something that the psp was supposed to have, functionality with the PS3......never ended up with much. the new Vita has a lot of this functionality and then some, why buy yet another console when you can get one of those? In all fairness sony has sucked at supporting some of their much touted peripherals in the past, so it's justified for there to be some doubt as to wether sony will live up to their promises.

Verdict for the Geezer......NOT SOLD

Yet at least, lets see what the future holds
